Micro:bit Physical Computing Curriculum Design
Over a one-year consultancy project with Ropley Primary School, I worked with the team to explore how physical computing could be meaningfully embedded across the computing curriculum from Year 2 to Year 6.
The project combined curriculum development, teacher CPD and in-class support. I designed a three-part training programme using the BBC micro:bit, beginning with simple inputs and outputs such as LEDs, buttons, movement and temperature, before moving into conductivity, electronics and interactive projects.
A key part of the work was helping teachers connect coding to technology children already recognise in everyday life, making computing feel more tangible, relevant and creative.
Rather than treating the CPD as a standalone programme, we paused between sessions to test ideas in the classroom, reflect on what was working and identify where teachers and pupils needed more support. I also worked directly with classes to help embed projects into existing curriculum pathways.
The final stage explores motors, physical computing and creative engineering through projects such as kinetic artwork, roller coasters and fairground rides.
The aim throughout has been to build teacher confidence and create a sustainable approach to computing that can continue beyond the project.
